DESCRIPTION:Clay Art Center invites you to join us for the Opening Reception of concurrent exhibitions: \nFinding The Center: The Clay Art Center Historic Collection & Made in Earnest: Ceramic Work by Jon Townley \nThis Opening Reception celebrates the historic past and contemporary present of Clay Art Center. Grounded in the objects on display\, Finding the Center will tell the story of the artists who came through Clay Art Center and developed their creative voice there\, and how they also impacted the world of ceramics. The exhibition will include ceramics from our historic collection\, and a variety of supporting materials from our rarely-seen paper archives. Works by artists on display will include pieces from Viola Frey\, Tashiko Takaezu\, Makoto Yabe\, F. Carlton Ball\, Harding Black\, Trude Petri-Raben\, Ted Randall\, Jeff Schlanger\, and more. \nConcurrently\, Clay Art Center will celebrate the ceramic work of artist and Clay Art Center instructor Jon Townley with a solo exhibition. Made in Earnest presents a body of functional and sculptural work that has evolved into a perfect synthesis of form\, technique\, and mastery of ceramic materials. The work resonates with the Mid-Century aesthetics of Barbara Hepworth\, Henry Moore\, Ruth Duckworth\, Brancusi\, and others\, where form comes first. Thompson: Transitions\, a solo exhibition of ceramic sculptures that blends the narratives of urban and rural human migration. \nThe artist states\, “My current research investigates the ideas of migration and residual ancestral memories that examine space and place that reference human existence. Through continuous mobility and the physical process of reduction made by nature\, human beings create pathways that explore physical space that may produce visual silence\, evoke the imagination\, offer notions of commodities and value\, and illustrate a sense of desperation that provides insights into various cultural practices and traditions. My works are reminders of the past and current lessons that we need to learn about the persistence and preservation of one’s own culture. My relic series references dilapidated and vacant houses that exist in urban and rural communities. These houses often tell multiple stories about communities that have evolved and changed over time. With this work\, I hope to trigger memories that have been suppressed about home loss or evoke emotions that symbolize hope and rejuvenation. It also asks the question of who takes ownership and responsibility for the built environment.” \nA hands-on workshop with the artist will take place on Saturday\, April 27th from 9am – 4pm. Works selected by Guest Juror Cory Brown explore the expressive and lively variations of color that lift the spirit and vibrate the soul\, ranging from sculptures to wall pieces and functional ceramics. Artists have also created a rainbow of vases and flower bricks reflecting the exhibition theme using dynamic color\, positivity and joy\, shown in the second\, invitational portion of the exhibition. This exhibition celebrates all the beautiful colors surrounding us that bring delight and energy to our daily lives. \nMeet the artists at the opening reception on Saturday\, April 29 from 5 – 7pm. This is an opportunity to survey their work collectively and to meet some of the artists in person. \nFree guided tours of the exhibition will be offered every Wednesday at 11:30am starting 3/8.
