The first 75 attendees will receive a free copy of Linda’s book courtesy of Heard in Rye. \nAbout Linda: \nLINDA FLANAGAN is a freelance journalist\, a former cross-country and track coach\, and the author of Take Back the Game: How Money and Mania Are Ruining Kids’ Sports—and Why It Matters. A graduate of Lehigh University\, Flanagan holds master’s degrees from Oxford University and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and was an analyst for the National Security Program at Harvard University. She is a founding board member of the New York City chapter of the Positive Coaching Alliance\, a contributor to Project Play at the Aspen Institute\, and a regular writer for NPR’s education site MindShift. Her columns on sports have appeared in The New York Times\, The Atlantic\, and Runner’s World\, and she is currently co-producing a documentary series on mental health in collegiate women athletes. A mother of three and a lifelong athlete\, Flanagan lives in Summit with her husband\, Bob\, and a small menagerie of pets. She is still floating over Malcolm Gladwell’s recent claim that Take Back the Game was one of his favorite books last year.

The film features Bryan Stevenson\, founder of the Equal Justice Initiative. He explains how the Transatlantic slave trade was centered in the north\, not the south\, in the 17th and 18th century – with New Amsterdam as its epicenter – and Wall Street as its largest slave market. Larry Epstein is a two-time Emmy award-winning documentary and news producer\, journalist\, writer\, anchor and corporate copywriter. SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Rye's History Trees - An Exhibition of Rye's Historic Trees
DESCRIPTION:Join the opening reception of Rye’s Historic Trees\, an exhibition of Rye’s Historic Trees at the Rye Free Reading Room’s Art Gallery – Meeting Room. \nAmong the programs for the Bicentennial celebrations in 1976\, Rye included a “Bicentennial Tree” contest and encouraged residents to identify trees within Rye that were at least 200 years old. Nineteen trees qualified and an additional twenty-five were judged to be “almost qualified.” \nAbout two years ago\, Paul and Barbara Hicks\, set out to revive Rye’s Bicentennial Tree program in time for the nation’s 250th anniversary on July 4\, 2026. The project\, called the “RR250 Historic Tree Initiative\,” added a new dimension when the “team” was joined by their friend\, Jim Frank\, a recently retired professor of photography. \nIn addition to recording the species and ages of historic Rye trees\, Jim’s photographs preserve a record of them in various seasons\, locations\, foliage\, and lighting. Many of them capture leaf\, bark\, and other distinctive features that help us learn the difference between red and white oaks or sugar and red maples\, etc. We hope that many will be inspired by these and other historic trees to think of the revolutionary period in Rye when some of these trees first sprouted.

DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Book Sale will take place on Saturday\, September 19th and Sunday\, September 20th\, 2026. The book sale is open from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday\, and from 10 pm to 3 pm on Sunday. \nWhat are the prices for the items? \n\nChildren’s books are $1 each\nTeen books are $3 each\nAdult books are $3 each\n\nWhat items can I donate to the library book sale? \nBeginning September 8\, 2026\, you can donate any book in good condition to the book sale. We accept material for all ages and all genres. Please limit your donation to no more than 5 boxes or bags. Donations will only be accepted through September 17th. \nPlease note that library staff are not able to unload donations from private vehicles. \nWhat items do you not accept? \n\nAny books that have water damage\, mold damage\, missing pages or are heavily marked up\nAny books that are library discards\nEncyclopedias\nReader’s Digest condensed books\nVCR tapes or cassette tapes\nDVDs\nCDs\nMagazines\nPhone books\nComputer books older than 5 years\nTextbooks\n\nWhere can I donate my items? \nItems for the book sale must be brought to the library meeting room. Longtime Rye resident and debut author Michael Eck will be introducing Strike Season\, the true story of his 1979 high school football team in Pittsburgh\, where he became Head Coach for weeks of practices and games when a teachers strike pulled their coaches from the sideline. \nBilled as Friday Night Lights meets Lord of the Flies the memoir has received national attention. Parents\, student athletes and anyone interested in a coming of age\, inspirational story which is told in an engaging and authentic way. All proceeds will be donated to Michael’s nonprofit Steer for Student Athletes.
