SUMMARY:Children's Lit: It Matters!
DESCRIPTION:This course is designed for 4-7 year olds and their adults\, but open to everyone. \n“Children’s Lit: It Matters!” is designed to inspire children to read and interact with literature\, while also demonstrating to the adults in the room the foundational importance of children’s stories in modern society. \nThe course is inspired by Doris Bird\, who faithfully served as the Children’s Librarian at the Rye Free Reading Room for more than 40 years. Over the course of those years\, Ms. Bird created a substantial collection of first edition classics\, one of which will be the focus each week. Following a brief introduction of each title\, our host will engage the children first through the story\, then through a hands-on activity to enhance the moral of each story. While the kids craft\, the adults will engage in a discussion on the deeper lessons of these classic tales and their value to society today.

SUMMARY:Lydia C. Thompson: Transitions
DESCRIPTION:Lydia C. Thompson: Transitions \nA solo exhibition in the gallery and online at Clay Art Center.\nApril 27th – June 7th\, 2024 \nPlease join us for an Opening Reception on Saturday\, April 27th\, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm \nClay Art Center is pleased to present Lydia C. Thompson: Transitions\, a solo exhibition of ceramic sculptures that blends the narratives of urban and rural human migration. \nThe artist states\, “My current research investigates the ideas of migration and residual ancestral memories that examine space and place that reference human existence. Through continuous mobility and the physical process of reduction made by nature\, human beings create pathways that explore physical space that may produce visual silence\, evoke the imagination\, offer notions of commodities and value\, and illustrate a sense of desperation that provides insights into various cultural practices and traditions. My works are reminders of the past and current lessons that we need to learn about the persistence and preservation of one’s own culture. My relic series references dilapidated and vacant houses that exist in urban and rural communities. These houses often tell multiple stories about communities that have evolved and changed over time. With this work\, I hope to trigger memories that have been suppressed about home loss or evoke emotions that symbolize hope and rejuvenation. It also asks the question of who takes ownership and responsibility for the built environment.” \nA hands-on workshop with the artist will take place on Saturday\, April 27th from 9am – 4pm. Details and registration are available on our website. \nLearn more about the artist\, exhibition\, and workshop on our website: www.clayartcenter.org

SUMMARY:Fossils 101: Intro to Paleontology
DESCRIPTION:This course is designed for ages 14-140. \nLed by Carl Mehling\, one of the American Museum of Natural History’s esteemed paleontologists and pre-eminent scholar on Roland T. Bird\, this is one course you won’t want to miss. Over the course of 3 Saturdays\, Carl will take us back hundreds of millions of years to discover how dinosaurs suddenly turned to stone\, archaeologists pulled them out of the ground\, dusted them off\, and put their skeletons into museums– Oh wait\, hold on a sec. Carl says that’s not exactly true. \nSo what really happened behind-the-scenes in museums and what do fossil nerds like Carl actually do? Guess you’ll just have to sign up for the class to find out.

SUMMARY:"Soundtrack" Book Talk with Alison Cupp Relyea
DESCRIPTION:At The Rye Arts CenterSaturday\, April 27th from 1:30pm – 2:30pm\, Free \nClick here to RSVP: Soundtrack Book Talk Workshop \nSoundtrack: Liner Notes from a Pandemic Mixtape captures the full range of emotions\, just like a favorite song. In twenty essays and two bonus tracks written during the heart of the COVID-19 crisis\, Alison Cupp Relyea evokes the power of music to inspire\, heal\, and move us even . . . perhaps especially . . . in our most difficult times. Soundtrack acts as a microphone to amplify the intersection of intimate bonds\, surprising nostalgia\, and universal meaning that were essential to cope with the defining world event of our era. While the dark early days of an unknown circulating virus are behind us\, Cupp Relyea reminds us that the tender exchanges and heightened observation we sought then are\, like music\, timeless. Whether sharing vulnerable family moments or the lasting influence of pop culture icons such as Sinéad O’Connor\, Patti Smith\, or Tom Hanks\, the author blends lyrical descriptions and poignant storytelling. This insightful memoir reveals how curiosity and connection can lead to a greater understanding of the relationships\, environments\, and voices that shape us. Like homemade mixtapes curated with love and deep intention back in the day\, Cupp Relyea carefully chooses the words and rhythms that will resonate with her intended listener―you. \nAlison Cupp Relyea is an educator and a writer. She recently published her first essay collection entitled Soundtrack: Liner Notes from a Pandemic Mixtape. She helped found a literary festival called Watershed. Alison lives in Rye with her husband\, Rich\, and their three children\, Rob\, Eliza\, and Ian. Alison began her teaching career in New York CIty\, where she earned a Master’s in Museum Education from Bank Street College. After teaching elementary school in Manhattan for a decade\, she moved to Rye in 2014 and worked at the Rye Historical Society for the past six years. Alison is a founding member of the pRYEde Community Group\, a nonprofit in Rye that collaborates with other LGBTQ+ organizations to support and raise awareness for LGBTQ+ youth and families. Alison and one other founder have led a youth mural project in partnership with the Rye Town Park Commission. This year’s mural was the recipient of an ArtsWestchester grant. As a result of her work in the community\, she was awarded the NAACP’s Freedom History Champion Award in October 2023. \nClick here to purchase the book: Soundtrack Book
