SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Finding the Center & Jon Townley: Made in Earnest
DESCRIPTION:Clay Art Center invites you to join us for the Opening Reception of concurrent exhibitions: \nFinding The Center: The Clay Art Center Historic Collection & Made in Earnest: Ceramic Work by Jon Townley \nThis Opening Reception celebrates the historic past and contemporary present of Clay Art Center. Grounded in the objects on display\, Finding the Center will tell the story of the artists who came through Clay Art Center and developed their creative voice there\, and how they also impacted the world of ceramics. The exhibition will include ceramics from our historic collection\, and a variety of supporting materials from our rarely-seen paper archives. Works by artists on display will include pieces from Viola Frey\, Tashiko Takaezu\, Makoto Yabe\, F. Carlton Ball\, Harding Black\, Trude Petri-Raben\, Ted Randall\, Jeff Schlanger\, and more. \nConcurrently\, Clay Art Center will celebrate the ceramic work of artist and Clay Art Center instructor Jon Townley with a solo exhibition. Made in Earnest presents a body of functional and sculptural work that has evolved into a perfect synthesis of form\, technique\, and mastery of ceramic materials. The work resonates with the Mid-Century aesthetics of Barbara Hepworth\, Henry Moore\, Ruth Duckworth\, Brancusi\, and others\, where form comes first. Jon’s contemporary artistic voice speaks to the same forces that compelled artists in the earliest days of Clay Art Center to make\, and to pursue a line of creative enquiry that can only be answered in clay. \nEnjoy a Curator’s Talk\, Artist Talk\, light refreshments and Free Guided Tours of Artist Studios and Facilities.

SUMMARY:The Osborn Presents Patrick Bringley\, Author of “All the Beauty in the World”
DESCRIPTION:The Osborn will host Patrick Bringley\, author of “All the Beauty in the World\,” on Thursday\, April 16 at 7:00 pm. The event\, which is free and open to the public\, will be held at The Osborn Auditorium (101 Theall Road\, Rye\, NY). \nThis acclaimed book tells the story of Patrick Bringley\, a former staff member of The New Yorker\, who spends a decade as a museum guard in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. When Patrick’s older brother was diagnosed with fatal cancer\, he found himself needing to escape the mundane clamor of daily life. So he quit The New Yorker and sought solace in the most beautiful place he knew. As his bonds with his colleagues and the art grow\, he comes to understand how fortunate he is to be walled off in this\nlittle world\, and how much it resembles the best aspects of the larger world to which he\ngradually\, gratefully returns. \nFor more information on this exciting program and other upcoming WellSpring events\, see below.

SUMMARY:Tuesdays at 10 Presents “Why Our Brains Need Wildlands” With Dr. Susan Masino
DESCRIPTION:Ever wonder why\, when you walk through a forest or sit quietly by a mountain stream\, you simply feel better? \nProtecting our brains and protecting areas for natural processes are both vitally important for our long-term wellbeing. These two goals are mutually reinforcing\, and common-sense policies and actions can benefit individual and collective health. On April 14th (10:00 a.m. at Whitby Castle)\, Susan A. Masino\, Ph.D.\, Distinguished Professor of Applied Science at Trinity College in Hartford\, Connecticut with a joint appointment in Neuroscience and Psychology\, will present to Tuesdays at 10 on “Why Our Brains Need Wildlands” and the benefits of wild places on our mental and physical wellbeing. \nThere is growing evidence for brain health benefits of nature across all ages – even seniors! These benefits include positive changes in brain activity\, improved cognition and emotional regulation\, and decreased depression and anxiety. Brain health is the foundation of personal adaptability and good decision-making\, and\, in parallel\, clear policies that designate natural areas\, i.e. “wildlands\,” can secure long-term benefits within and across our communities. \nCome join us on April 14th and see why getting outdoors and preserving wildlands are so essential in an increasingly noisy and hyper-technological world.
