Rye High Soccer Stars Hit the Pros

Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) returned to the USA Sunday night with the help of two 2005 Rye High grads, Alex Singer of the Washington Freedom and Greer Barnes of the Los Angeles Sol. WPS reported:

"Whether you’re a fan who has waited six years for professional women’s soccer to return to the U.S. or a participant who has waited a lifetime to call herself a professional soccer player, you’re going to remember Sunday’s WPS Inaugural Match between the Washington Freedom and Los Angeles Sol at The Home Depot Center in Carson, California (5:30pm ET/2:30pm PT, FSC)."

Barnes and Singer PatriotsFC (PHOTO: Barnes and Singer, courtesy of Patriots Football Club) Singer and Barnes played for Rye High School and for the Patriots Football Club, a Westchester soccer league out of Eastchester. LoHud has a piece on local players in WPS including Singer and Barnes.

WPS is trying to break back into the US market and build up the sport. Season ticket packages for the Los Angels Sol are only $105 for all ten home games. Sign me up. I can hardly buy a couple beers at Yankee stadium for that price.

  1. Three cheers for their local Rye coaches in Rye Youth Soccer (Andy Goodenough, Ed Carey, Paul Kawas and Steve Feeney) and at Rye High School (Rich Savage)

Congratulations to the community and families who provided the resources, transportation, half-time refreshments and inspiration enabling these two Garnets to fulfill their dreams.
