A Summary of the 2/23/10 Rye City School District Board of Education Meeting

Superintendent's Report

At the beginning of every meeting, the superintendent of schools, Dr. Shine, provides a report to the Board and community.  At this meeting Dr. Shine shared information and achievements in the following areas of student life:  Fundraising efforts for Haiti relief at each Rye school; RHS language students' trip to Italy; RHS Students of the 2nd Quarter Paul Mundinger and Maki Nakijima/Distinguished Service Award recipient, teacher Jennifer Giaquinto; author Charles Smith's presentation to Milton students and the innovative use of technology in a multi-discipline unit on Impressionism introduced by Milton teachers West Friedman, Shawn Amdur and Iris Praid.
2010-2011 School Calendar

The Board approved the School Calendar for next year.  Highlights of the calendar are now posted on the District web site. The full calendar will be available shortly.

Superintendent's Recommended Budget

Dr. Shine and business official Kathleen Ryan presented details of the Superintendent's Recommended Budget to the Board. In it, the projected budget-to-budget increase is 1.32% over the current year's budget. While there are some projected layoffs, the goal of the budget is to maintain the educational program, support the District's Goals and Priorities, and keep budget cuts as far away from students as possible.

This was the first public discussion of next year's school budget.  Future meetings on the budget are planned:

March 9 Presentation on Program Costs
March 23   Open Topics Forum with the Board re the Budget
April 13  Budget Adoption
May 4     Budget Hearing
May 18   Budget Vote

All presentations and data will be posted on the District web site in the Budget and Board Elections section.

The Board approved the proposed 2010-2011 Boys Varsity Swim Team merger with Rye Neck and Blind Brook and the proposed 2010-2011 Varsity Boys Wrestling Team merger with Rye Neck, subject to budget approval.
