Concert Series at Rye Town Park Announced

Rye Town Park and the Friends of Rye Town Park are sponsoring a series of seven free concerts at the south pavilion of Rye Town Park during the summer of 2011. The concerts feature the music of Westchester-area based bands, playing a wide range of popular music ideal for singing and/or dancing along.

The concerts will be held on Tuesdays starting on June 28th.  Two dates have been set aside in case of thunderstorms.  Concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. and end at about 9 p.m.  Admission to the concerts is free, and parking is $2 at the park after 5 p.m.

Some seating will be available, but people are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets.  The concerts will be held rain or shine, except in the case of thunderstorms.  Picnicking is welcome, and dining or take-out is available at the nearby Seaside Johnnie’s restaurant.

Here’s the lineup:

June 28th – Caribbean Sun Kings – popular music done Caribbean style. Well known Reggae, Soca, and Calypso songs combined with “tropically spiced” popular music. The band of seasoned entertainers features steel pan, guitar, keyboards, bass, and drums.

July 5th   – Rock Island Sound Rejects – rock and blues guitarist, pianist, bassist, composer and arranger Paul Bessolo brings over 25 years of experience and an impressive cadre of talents to his Band of Rye’s Rock Island Sound music school teachers.  Ready to Rock!

July 12th  – Carlos Jimenez and Mambo Dulcet – Yonkers-based leader Carlos Jimenez plays flute and is joined by guitarists, percussionists and other instruments.  With the setting sun and gentle waves of Long Island Sound, this will be a night for sweet tropical romance.

July 19th – Make-Up Date In Case of Storm Cancellation

July 26th – Reddy Valentino Orchestra – “swing” music featuring trumpets, trombones and reeds.  They’ve played social functions, as well as Windows On The World, Glen Island Casino and Rye’s Wainwright House. Sixteen players for a big band sound.

August 2nd  –Billy & The Showmen – one of the region’s most popular and enduring Rhythm & Blues bands.   Their R & B Revue features the soulful vocals of the best singers in the Northeast, along with a strong horn section and a tight rhythm section.

August 9th — The Derivatives – definitely not “toxic assets.”  The Rye-based six-member band has been part of the Rye Town Park Concert Sunset Series for many years, and this will be no exception.  You can bank on it.  Bring the family and dance the night away.

August 16th   Make Up Date In Case of Storm Cancellation

August 23rd – The Angelo Rubino Band – with Ang as lead singer and sax player, and his daughter, vocalist Ann Rubino. The band performs a wide range of musical styles from the 1940’s to the 90’s – everything from big band dance tunes, soft rock, and Doo-wop, to Latin pop.
