Coast Flood Warning Rye NY – Hurricane Sandy

Rye PD has issued the following coastal flood warning:

Alert: Coastal Flood Warning issued 6AM Monday-3PM Tuesday. Major coastal flooding possible. Details attached. Plan now.

The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Warning effective 6:00 A.M. Monday, October 29th through 3:00 P.M. Tuesday, October 30th. A storm surge of as much as 4 to 8 feet has the potential to cause major coastal flooding on the coastlines of Long Island Sound. Residents in flood prone coastal areas are urged to consider making alternate lodging arrangements during the storm.

Now is the time to plan. Forecasts indicate that this is a potentially dangerous storm. During periods of gale force or higher winds and flooding conditions, rescuers will not be able to reach you. Please take precautions while there is an opportunity.

AT THE SAME TIME…5 TO 8 FT WAVES ARE POSSIBLE ALONG EXPOSED EASTERN AND NORTHEASTERN FACING PORTIONS OF LONG ISLAND SOUND…PECONIC BAY…AND NEW YORK HARBOR. THIS IS EXPECTED TO CAUSE MAJOR BEACH EROSION AND LOCALIZED WASHOVERS.

* TIMING…MINOR COASTAL FLOODING IS LIKELY WITH THE EVENING HIGH TIDES ON SUNDAY…WITH WIDESPREAD MODERATE COASTAL FLOODING LIKELY BY THE MONDAY MORNING HIGH TIDE CYCLE. MAJOR COASTAL FLOODING…POSSIBLY TO RECORD LEVELS…IS LIKELY DURING THE MONDAY NIGHT HIGH TIDE CYCLES. * FLOOD WATCH FOR ALL OF SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT…NORTHEAST NEW
JERSEY AND SOUTHEAST NEW YORK.

* FROM EARLY MONDAY MORNING THROUGH TUESDAY AFTERNOON.

* A DANGEROUS COASTAL STORM IS EXPECTED TO BRING BETWEEN 2 AND 6 INCHES OF RAIN EARLY MONDAY MORNING THROUGH TUESDAY. THE HIGHEST RAINFALL AMOUNTS ARE EXPECTED IN THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS…AND IN AREAS THAT EXPERIENCE PROLONGED HEAVY RAIN BANDS. RAINFALL RATES OF 1 TO 2 INCHES PER HOUR ARE POSSIBLE IN THE HEAVIEST BANDS.

* THESE RAINFALL AMOUNTS WILL CAUSE WIDESPREAD URBAN AND POOR DRAINAGE FLOODING MONDAY MORNING INTO TUESDAY…WITH FLOODING OF FLASHY…FAST RESPONDING STREAMS LIKELY AS WELL.
