Rye City Update Friday: Staying Warm Safely; Repair Permits

Rye City Update, Friday 11/02/12:

Staying Safe After Hurricane Sandy

Staying Warm Safely

Temperatures are expected to stay below 45° F over the next week.  With many families still without power we remind residents and businesses to stay warm safely.  Improper heating practices can cause fires and Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning.  Please follow these safety tips:

If using portable generators please read, understand and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Always operate emergency generators outdoors and away from any open window and at lease five feet away from structures or combustible materials.  DO NOT operate generators within garages, sheds or other enclose or partially enclosed structures.

Only use heating devices approved for indoor use. Do not use cooking equipment intended for outdoor use as a heat source or indoor cooking device.

Ensure that Carbon Monoxide (CO) detectors are working correctly and have fresh batteries.

Use of candles is strongly discouraged.

Check with elderly or disabled relative and neighbors to ensure their safety.

Permits for Repair and Restoration of Damaged Property

The wave action and flooding associated with Hurricane Sandy has caused damage to structures and property within the City’s coastal areas.  Property owners are permitted to restore damaged property and structures, such as yards, walls, terraces and buildings to their pre-hurricane condition without the need for a wetland permit from the City of Rye. All work should be done by licensed contractors.

Repair activities that involve structural work to a building or wall or exceed 50% of the market value of the home may require a building permit from the City of Rye.  If you are unsure as to what permits may be required please contact the City Building or Planning Departments.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) regulates activities within coastal areas.  NYSDEC issued emergency permit authorization to address storm-related repairs within coastal areas.
