Hen Island Cleanup 2014

Saturday, September 20, 2014

In conjunction with the Northeast Chapter of the American Littoral Society, Kuder Island Colony, Inc. (KIC) today participated in the 2014 New York State Beach Cleanup Event. The event is part of the annual International Coastal Cleanup event sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy in Washington, DC.

During today’s event 30 volunteers representing KIC collected and cataloged approximately 275 pounds of debris from one-mile of shoreline at KIC’s Hen Island property in Milton Harbor, Rye, NY – much of it plastic and foam litter. All of the debris originates from off-island sources and collects in the estuarine environment on Hen Island. The information collected during this cleanup will be provided to the American Littoral Society for inclusion into the state-wide data.

Today’s event marks the third consecutive year of KIC’s participation in this state-wide effort to enlist volunteers to document and cleanup shoreline debris. In 2013, 5,954 volunteers cleaned and documented 57,604 pounds of debris along 173 miles of New York State’s shoreline.

KIC would like to thank all of the volunteers who participated in today’s cleanup and special thanks to the Town of Rye Supervisor’s Office and the City of Rye DPW for assisting with disposal of the collected debris.

  1. Ray, that’s not the case. This is the third annual occurrence of this event. It predates your trailer by a few years. We get positive press because, contrary to your claims, we do positive things for the shoreline community. We are by far the greenest, most sustainable community in Rye, and we are passionate about protecting the shoreline wetlands that surround our island.
By the way, we missed you at the cleanup.
