Rye High Goes Fully Remote in Wake of Three COVID Cases

The Rye School District announced the high school will be going to a fully remote schedule starting Monday. The closure is “Due to the number of students, faculty, and staff required to quarantine” in the wake of the three new cases of COVID announced earlier on Friday.

The District was busy contacting those impacted Friday afternoon. It is anticipated the high school will reopen on Wednesday, December 16.

Dear RCSD Families,
Today the District learned of three positive cases at Rye High School. The individuals are currently in quarantine and were last at the school on Monday, November 30, in some cases, and on Tuesday, December 1, in others. Due to federal health privacy laws, additional information about the individuals cannot be released.
After extensive discussions with the Westchester County Department of Health, we made the decision to close the school and shift to remote learning this morning. Due to the number of students, faculty, and staff required to quarantine based on the three cases, Rye High School will be on a fully-remote schedule beginning Monday, December 7. We anticipate that the High School will reopen on Wednesday, December 16. We will make a final decision about reopening the school building in conjunction with the DOH. Please be on the lookout for additional information about the reopening of in-person school.

The District is contacting the students, faculty, and staff who were exposed to the affected individuals to notify them and ask them to quarantine. I know this is concerning news, but please respect the privacy rights of the affected individuals during this difficult time. If you do not receive a message, you or your student are not believed to have been exposed at Rye High School.

Persons identified as a contact of an individual who tested positive will receive a call from a contact tracer. Your caller ID may read “NYS Contact Tracing” or display a phone number with a 518 area code. Please answer these calls promptly. Your identity and any information you share will remain confidential. Please provide Contact Tracers with the information they need to protect the wider community.

For more information about the WCDOH protocols for handling COVID-19 issues, please see their FAQ (HERE) and the NYSDOH guidance for COVID-19 decision-making (COVID-19 Toolkit).

Please know that we are doing everything in our power to protect the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff and are working closely with the Department of Health to manage this particular situation.

I wish you and your family good health during these extremely challenging times.

Eric Byrne, Ed.D.

Superintendent of Schools
