RYE GARNETS @ BREWSTER BEARS – FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 9 @ 7:00PM

People ask the Old Garnet many questions about Garnet football lore. Last week’s most FAQ was “ What is “Week Zero”?

The Answer:

Week Zero is the final weekend before the official start of Section One football’s regular season. Teams have the option of participating in a traditional multi-squad scrimmage, often times attended by up to four other teams. Or schools are allowed to schedule a real game with real referees under real game conditions against a real opponent not on their upcoming season schedule. For the 2021 season Rye was one of a few teams that scheduled a Week Zero game – against Our Lady of Lourdes of Poughkeepsie. This season the Garnets booked Section 9’s Cornwall Dragons, a multiple-season New York State Class A Champion. Two important Week Zero distinctions:

(1) the game counts in the season’s won/loss record, but (2) the game does not impact post-season playoff seedings.

After last Friday’s 43-22 Week Zero win over Cornwall, the Garnets once again are on the road this Friday for their Week 1 season opener as Rye cautiously enters the liar of the BREWSTER BEARS. It has been many hibernations since the Garnets last awakened the slumbering Green and White, perhaps as far back into the past as the passage of twenty-four years when the Garnets and the Bears last met in a 1997 Section One playoff game. On that occasion Brewster stifled the Garnet offense that featured Chris Feeney, Rye’s All-Section wide receiver and son of the O/G. That night the Brewster Bears caught the salmon. The other seven contests leading to the 4-4-0 historical series record must have been from the way-distant past. In the 2022 season’s opener the GARNETS POKE THE BEARS 37-6.

Next week on MyRye.com join the Old Garnet for a preview of Week 2’s contest as the Garnets are on the road once more traveling to meet the Yorktown Huskers.

  1. Brewster last faced off against Rye in 2016, where Brewster quarterback and Syracuse football bound Jack Guida led the bears to a gritty 11-7 victory under the lights in Brewster.

    Nice try though.
