DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, July 21st via Zoom\, Rye Youth Council presents “The College Transition: You Got In … Now What?”\, a program created for college freshmen and their parents that provides knowledge\, skills and strategies to support the social and emotional transition to college and help students navigate their first semester away from home. \nPreparing for the College Transition begins with information presented by professionals from Pace University and Purchase College who specialize in the first year experience\, with a focus on supporting mental health among college freshmen. \nThese professionals share key insights and will address topics such as: \n\nfreshmen self-care plans\ncommunication expectations\npreparing for and dealing with stressors\nprivacy laws for students 18 and older\nunderstanding the role of the healthcare proxy\n\nAttendees then hear from a panel of college sophomores and their parents\, who share first-hand experience on topics including: \n\ngetting through the first few weeks\nchanging relationships with family and friends\nmanaging the dining hall/dorm life/ social life\nhow to navigate student affair and campus life\nusing college resources\n\nStudents and their parents are intended to learn this information together\, which will assist in setting appropriate expectations and fostering improved communication. \nThis unique Transition to College program will help prepare students and families to successfully navigate the social and emotional transition to college\, with the ultimate goal of decreasing stress and anxiety\, understanding common fears and challenges shared by incoming freshmen\, developing realistic expectation about the first-year experience\, and helping students understand they are not alone. \nClick here to register.
