Rye Town Park is presenting a “Sand Castle Building Festival” on the beach at the park, Saturday, July 21st.
The event is designed for family fun and cooperation, rather than cutthroat competition. Older, more experienced sculptors are encouraged to help out the novices.
There are no specific project categories, but in general there are two types of sand sculptures – those starting with a block of wet sand, which then gets formed into a shape by removing sand (such as a shark); and, those where objects such as castles or other buildings are created — by adding sand. In addition to “selfies” there will also be opportunities for “Sandies.”
Registration will start at 9:30 a.m., and the official start of the event will be at 10 am. Families should bring their own tools. In case of rain, it will be held Sun from 1-3 pm . To read up on sand castle building before the event, there are many YouTube videos, or “how to” books on line or in print forms. One example is “Sand Castles Made Simple.”
The deadline for completing sand sculptures will be noon. Project space will be roughly 5 feet by 5 feet – with some leeway.
Spectators are welcome, and coaching will be permitted if invited by the teams. All teams building sculptures will receive beverages and snacks.
Prizes will be awarded for the best two projects that were worked on cooperatively. The event is sponsored by the Barley Beach House Restaurant at Rye Town park.
To register on line, go to the Rye Town Park and Beach web site; then, under What’s Happening At The Park, select the Castle Building choice. For further information, Call Sara at 914 881-4535
