Smells a Little Damp Around Here…

Rye_ny_flooding_locust_avenue_03022007_1Rye got swamped on Friday, literally. In a few short hours Rye was hit with massive rain fall causing a level of flooding no one could recall seeing in recent memory. The Rye fire department rescued 35 people by pontoon boat according to WINS news radio.

Rye City Manager Paul Shew issued an alert at 1:45pm Friday according to an email released from the Rye schools.

He asked that everyone stay away from Indian Village, and from the Post Road at both Parsons Street and Central Avenue because they are impassable except by large trucks.  He asked that parents please do their best to avoid these areas when picking up their children.  He also reported that Interstate 95 is closed in both directions at exit 21, Midland Avenue, because of flooding. Because the water is receding, however, this exit may be clear in the next hour.

The flood made Park Avenue and the Park Avenue bridge over the Beaver Swamp Brook impassable unless you were driving a 4-wheel drive (below).
