Rye Flood Closes Schools, Roads Impassable

Yesterday’s flooding in Rye (see earlier Rye flood coverage) has caused all Rye schools to be closed today, April 16, 2007. Many roads remain impassable. The Beaver Swamp Brook was flooded nearly all the way to Coolidge Avenue at 7am this morning.

The Osborn School issued the following:

All schools are closed today, Monday, April 16th. Many roads are closed making travel difficult if not impossible and there has been damage caused by flooding. All after school clubs, events and activities are canceled, as well.

At 6:50am this morning, the National Weather Service issued this advisory advising a coastal flood warning remains in effect until 1pm today:

650 AM EDT MON APR 16 2007

…COASTAL FLOOD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 1 PM EDT THIS AFTERNOON…

DURING THE HIGH TIDE CYCLE THIS MORNING…2 1/2 FT OF SURGE ARE NEEDED TO PRODUCE MODERATE COASTAL FLOODING…WITH 1 1/2 FT TO PRODUCE MINOR FLOODING. MAJOR COASTAL FLOODING IS EXPECTED IN WESTERN LONG ISLAND SOUND…WITH A STORM SURGE OF 4 1/2 TO 5 FEET.

AT STAMFORD…FLOODING OF THIS MAGNITUDE WOULD BE NEARLY EQUAL TO THAT IN THE DECEMBER 1992 NOREASTER…AND AT KINGS POINT WOULD BE SOMEWHAT WORSE THAN THAT OF THE HALLOWEEN 1991 STORM.

A COASTAL FLOOD WATCH MAY BE REQUIRED FOR THE HIGH TIDE CYCLE TONIGHT…AS ONLY AROUND 1 1/2 TO 2 FT OF SURGE WILL BE REQUIRED TO PRODUCE MODERATE COASTAL FLOODING.

A COASTAL FLOOD WARNING MEANS THAT FLOODING IS IMMINENT. COASTAL RESIDENTS IN THE WARNED AREA SHOULD BE ALERT FOR RISING WATER… AND TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION TO PROTECT LIFE AND PROPERTY
