For Every Rye Coffee Table: Rye – the Book
Paul Rheingold, the Rye resident who just last year brought us Views of Rye 1917-2007, has published Rye – a book that shows Rye history via a collection of Rye historical postcards and accompanying anecdotes.
Rye is a must have for any Rye resident with a coffee table or a penchant for local history.
In terms of where Rheingold sourced these old postcards that effectively show that last 100 years of our history, Rheingold told MyRye.com “I got some great ones from two sources, the Rye Historical Society and Steve Feeney, local resident. However, I had never gone to the effort of trying to figure out exactly what the views showed or where they were, so I had about a year’s worth of research to come up with the info you see in the captions.” Rheingold flattered this writer when he said he had visited MyRye.com as part of his book research.
Rheingold’s book Rye (Arcadia Publishing, Postcard History Series, $21.99) will be available at Arcade Booksellers and the publisher's web site starting today.
We will run a few of the postcard images later this week. Most are from the early 20th century and show downtown, churches, schools, clubs, Oakland Beach, Rye Town Park, early amusement parks and Rye Playland.
Rheingold has served on the board of the Rye Historical Society and the Rye Planning Board. He is the founder of law firm Rheingold, Valet, Rheingold, Shkolnik & McCartney LLP and has been in practice since 1958. Rheingold currently serves on the Committee on Science, Technology and Law of the National Academies and also on the board of overseers of the Institute on Civil Justice of the RAND Institute, Santa Monica, CA. He is a former national officer of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America.
