Rye: Early 1900s: Pre-Highland Hall
We thought we'd share a few of the 200 photos in Paul Rheingold's new book Rye. The book shows Rye history via a collection of Rye historical postcards and accompanying anecdotes.
Highland Stables (AKA Rye Boarding Stables)
Until a decade or two into the 20th century, the horse was the primary means of getting around town. Just off Purchase Street were a series of stables pictured here. These were known as the Highland Stables, or, as shown here, Rye Boarding Stables. However, notice the signs, which state, "Rye School for Riding and Driving." The stables were replaced by Highland Hall apartments.
