Anchors Away: Rye Fire Department Saves a Piece of American History

Anchor at Milton Fire House parking lot

Something good has come in the wake of the destruction of Rye's Durland Scout Center.

The Rye Fire Department has saved the large anchor that sat at the entrance to the Durland Scout Center on Stuyvesant Avenue on Milton Point. The Durland Center was sold to a private developer in 2007 and the fate of the anchor was uncertain.

The anchor is from the USS Boston (CA-69/CAG-1), a Baltimore-class heavy cruiser that was launched in 1942 and saw service in World War II and Vietnam before finally being decommissioned in 1970.

A crew from Vincent Garage, along with their 75-ton rotator wrecker, helped Rye FD salvage the anchor and move it to the parking lot of the Milton Point Firehouse as it awaits its proper display.

No one seems to know the story of how the USS Boston's anchor wound up at the Durland Center. Do you know? Leave a comment below or contact us.

MyRye.com salutes the Rye FD for saving this important piece of American naval history.
