Saturday, August 7th: Yankees 5, Red Sox 2
The Yankees didn’t look like the Yankees last night. When Cervelli dropped that pop-up you knew it was going to fall apart. And of course when it looks like the Yankees will come back and its 4-3, Ryan Kalish homers. Who is Ryan Kalish? The Rays lost so the Yanks are still up a game on Tampa. CC Sabbathia goes for the Yanks and John Lackey for Boston. If Boston can take this game and win 3 out of 4 than they are right back in it.
Sunday: Yankees 7, Red Sox 2
I definitely feel satisfied with yesterdays game. The Yanks played well and took advantage of Boston’s mistakes. AJ Burnett got scratched and Dustin Mosely started in his place and Josh Beckett for Boston. Last time the Yankees faced Beckett on opening night, his off-speed was nothing and the Yankees were sitting on his fastball. The Yankees lost that game (all credits to Chan Ho Park) but the Yanks can hit Beckett and they better because you don’t know what your going to get with Mosely.
Monday: Yankees 1, Red Sox 2
Last night the Yankees executed great and Dustin Mosely pitched well while Lance Berkman went three for four. The Red Sox are done. Even though they are not mathematically eliminated they are not coming back to beat out the Yankees or the Rays. Today Jon Lester who has had success against the Yankees pitches for Boston and Phil Hughes goes for the Yanks. Look for a pitcher's duel of young arms.
Tuesday: Yankees 3, Rangers 4
I cant really say anything was good on offense because after the bases are loaded with nobody out and you don’t score, there is a problem. The Yankees for no apparent reason can't hit Jon Lester who I believe is now 5-1 lifetime against the Yankees. Why did Joe Girardi pinch hit Curtis Granderson who has proven time and time again he cant hit lefties? Why is Brett Gardner not running on the first pitch against a catcher (Victor Martinez) that can't throw people out? Remember in 1998 when Homer Bush was used as a pinch-runner and stole as a pinch-runner? Phil Hughes pitched well giving up two runs in a 2nd inning that could have been a lot worse. The only run for the Yanks on a Tex message in the 8th inning on Daniel Bard and the Yankees lose 2-1 splitting the four game set with Boston. The Yankees now open a big two game set with the Texas Rangers in a potential playoff preview. AJ Burnett goes for the Yanks against CJ Wilson.
Wednesday: Yankees 7, Rangers 6
Yesterday's game was played fine by the Yankees and I am going to give the Yankees a break because Mariano Rivera is allowed to blow a save once in a while. Could the Yankees have played better? Absolutely and come October I’m going to be all over them if they do that. But considering the fact that there was no Mark Texaira it's fine to lose one game. Today can be sort of a statement game for the Yankees because Cliff Lee is pitching for Texas who beat them twice in the World Series. If the Yankees say “We can beat this guy, we can score off of him.” then that’s a big statement. Javier Vazquez goes for the Yanks and he better be good down the stretch because he has a one year deal. I believe that the Yanks are a ½ game up on Tampa.
Thursday: (game not complete at press time)
Last night was definitely a statement game for the Yankees coming back from being down 6-1 against Cliff Lee and now sit 1 ½ games up on Tampa. They played great and got the job done. Mariano Rivera got the save. And to sweeten the deal Tampa lost. Today the Yanks open up a series with the Royals. CC Sabbathia goes for the Yanks and Bruce Chen for the Royals at Kauffman Stadium. Every game is a big game nowadays and the Yankees need to take advantage of the fact that they are playing the Kansas City Royals for a few games.
