Amico’s Midland STOP Signs Repo’ed for Now
Just when Jim Amico thought it was over.
Amico was brought to tears when he saw city contractors had installed STOP signs on Midland Avenue yesterday, years after he lost his son in a tragic accident on the same street.
But it turns out the whole thing was a big mistake and the STOP signs were removed—at least for now.
An email sent by Rye Mayor Doug French explains what transpired:
"Hello All: "I spoke with Jimmy late yesterday, and for clarification purposes, the plan is to have "yield for pedestrian" signs installed as part of the stimulus work and then pilot stop signs at the location similar to what we are doing in downtown. Scott and I are meeting with Jimmy and Maggie tomorrow morning to walk through the phasing process and will update the council at our meeting on the 15th. Unfortunately, the contractor got too far ahead too soon in the implementation plan, but we are making progress and getting closer to finalizing the necessary pedestrian improvements in that area — however, it will require a little more time as we work through the engineering requirements. I apologized to Jimmy for the confusion and thanked him for his understanding, but I think we are on the right path. As I told him, I look forward to the day when we can have a city-wide ribbon-cutting ceremony for all of the pedestrian safety improvements that have been completed around Rye, much of which has come from the work of previous committees and council as well as the attention Jimmy and Maggie continue to bring to this issue."
