Ethan’s NY Sports Journal: Yankees Secure Playoff Spot in Win
Penned by Rye resident and Rye Middle School sixth grader Ethan Sears, Ethan's NY Sports Journal column will report on and analyze New York metro sports teams. Today, Sears looks into the baseball postseason and assesses the prospects for the Bronx Bombers. Sears is a two time attendee of Sports Broadcasting Camps.
On Tuesday the Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-1. By doing so they insured a return to the postseason for the 15th time in the last 16 years. After losing two out of three to the Red Sox and losing the first game in a three game set against the Blue Jays, there was a bit of a scare among Yankee fans.
With their magic number at one and the Red Sox winning, the Yankees pulled out a win. However, the Rays are still leading the division and if that keeps the Yankees would have to play the Twins in Minnesota.
The Twins have been the most under the radar team this year and can probably best the Yankees with home field advantage. If the Yankees win the division they would play the Texas Rangers at home. Josh Hamilton is a big key to the Texas offense and if he is healthy there is no telling what could happen.
The key for the Yankees is CC Sabathia who is one of the best pitchers in the American League and will pitch Game 1 of the ALDS. If Sabathia loses Game 1, the rest of the Yankees rotation is full of question marks. At first base Mark Texaira is playing hurt. This team does not look like the team that won the World Series last year.
