Dr. John J. Smith was appointed Interim High School Principal at last night's Rye City School District Board of Education meeting.
Dr. Smith brings 24 years' experience as a high school principal, including interim positions at Southbury/Middlebury and Newtown, CT, high schools. Before his retirement in 2006, he had been the principal at high schools in East Haven, New Canaan, and West Hartford, CT, and Chappaqua, NY.
Dr. Smith received a Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut, an M.A. in teaching from Brown University and a B.A. from The University of Notre Dame. Before becoming a principal, he taught high school English.
"We are delighted to welcome Dr. Smith to Rye," said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Edward J. Shine. "He is fully prepared to support our faculty, students and parents this year and will help make a smooth transition for a new Rye High School principal on July 1, 2011."
Dr. Smith will assume his duties on Monday, November 1. The District will be conducting a search for a permanent replacement for Dr. Jim Rooney, who will retire on October 31.
