Running Barefoot, Making $46 Million, Franklin Now Exec Chair of Rye’s Jarden Corp

Ball jars. Diamond matches. First Alert smoke detectors. Crockpot. Mr. Coffee. Sunbeam. Coleman. K2 skis. Penn tennis balls. A garage sale full of unloved, forgotten and second rate brands. And the foundation of the giant Rye-headquartered conglomerate Jarden Corporation.

Most Rye residents likely only know Jarden because of its sponsorship of the Westchester Triathalon. But the company is a publicly traded $3.2 billion conglomerate of mostly consumer brands cobbled together over the years via acquisition by its deal-driven leader, Martin Franklin.

Franklin, who was the fourth highest paid CEO in 2010 raking in $45.2 million bones, recently assumed the position of executive chairman, handing the CEO spot to right hand man James Lillie.

Jarden boss Franklin is an avid runner who sometimes runs sans sneakers, competes in triathlons and even "ultras" (think triathlon on steroids). Recently he told the AP:

"I'm in the ideas business, and I've never had a good idea in the office. I need to be away from the phone and the hustle and bustle. I'm going to race across the Sahara for five days in October, and I'll be very productive. But will I be sitting behind a desk pushing paper around? No."
