Annual Rye History Tour This Sunday
This Sunday, October 16, 2011 between 9:40am and 2:40pm, the Rye Historical Society will present its popular fall history walking tour.
This year, we will visit two beautiful and historic cemeteries in Rye – the Greenwood Union Cemetery on North Street, dating to 1837, and the adjacent, historic African Cemetery which was active from 1860 until 1964 and is listed on the National, State and County Registers of Historic Places.
Tour participants will learn about the lives of the interesting people who are buried in these lovely and tranquil spaces and will also learn about the symbolism of cemetery monuments, the history of Rye and the surrounding area. The African Cemetery is the resting place for escaped slaves, Civil War veterans and other African-Americans who lived in this area during the 19th and 20th centuries. In the Greenwood Union Cemetery tour guides will speak about some of the leading Rye residents buried there and about the many monuments from the 19th century, a period that was rich in art and symbols.
Tours will take approximately 2 hours, departing every 20 minutes with the first tour departing at 9:40 AM and the last tour starting at 2:40 PM. Check-in will be at the Greenwood Union Cemetery on North Street in Rye.
