Former Rye Mayor Otis Planning State Office Run
Former Rye Mayor Steve Otis is planning a run for state office.
Contacted by MyRye.com in the wake of Suzi Oppenheimer's retirement announcement Thursday, Otis told MyRye.com "If George Latimer runs for the Senate seat my plan is to run for the Sound Shore Assembly seat." There is no word back from Latimer about his plans.
Otis currently serves as Oppenheimer's Counsel and Chief of Staff and has worked for her for 26 years and the State Senate for 31 years. He served as Rye Mayor 1998 to 2009.
Otis has many kind words about Oppenheimer's contributions to Rye over her 28 years of service in the Senate. "Suzi been very helpful to many groups and issues in Rye, including helping save the Jay Property in the 1980’s, assisting the Rye Free Reading Room, the Rye YMCA, the Rye Nature Center, Rye Arts Center, the Rye City and Rye Neck School Districts, and many other organizations in our town," said Otis.
"Winning passage of Rye’s hotel tax to reduce the tax burden on property taxpayers was a major achievement, as this was the first hotel tax signed into law that was requested by a Westchester municipality. Suzi also assisted in securing funding for the traffic safety improvements installed last year and helped Rye secure funding for various capital projects at Rye Town Park, including the duck pond expansion."
