Rye City Hurricane Sandy Update

Rye City Update, 12:30pm:

Alert: Full effects of Hurricane Sandy expected this afternoon and evening. Finalize plans and take action now. See details.

The City is experiencing some wind damage and coastal flooding associated with the morning high tide. The full effects of Hurricane Sandy are expected to strike this afternoon and evening. Record coastal flooding could be experienced with tonight’s high tide. Tidal surges of 6 to 11 feet and wind gusts up to 75 miles per hour are possible, as well as 1 to 3 inches of rain. We recommend that residents of vulnerable areas relocate to safer areas during the storm. The City of Rye has opened an emergency shelter at Rye Country Day School in the Upper Gym, located off Grandview Avenue. Additional Red Cross shelters are available at Port Chester and Mamaroneck High Schools.

This is expected to be a dangerous storm. Please prepare to take appropriate action before you are isolated by flooding or other effects of the storm. When sustained winds exceed 39 miles per hour, rescue workers and utility workers will not be able to reach you. Please monitor weather forecasts and advisories closely.
