Rye City Update: ConEd – Full Restoration Week + Away, No Halloween Date Yet

Update from Rye City Mayor French 5pm Thursday:

HURRICANE SANDY– POST STORM UPDATE NOVEMBER 1, 2012

The City has been coordinating with Con Edison and the County Office of Emergency Management as well as with Federal, State, County and Local officials on power restoration.

Here is the latest update:

  • Con Edison is still in the public safety phase of post-storm recovery, focusing on critical safety needs: hospitals, nursing homes, pump stations, and closed roads. At this time, 20 roads in the City of Rye have been re-opened and 17 remain closed. Upon completion of public safety work, the focus will shift to restoration, with an emphasis on schools.
  • There are currently 166,000 outages in Westchester, and 3,900 in the City of Rye (down from 4,513). 132 schools are without power countywide, including all Rye City District schools.  Rye City schools will be closed on Friday, November 2, 2012.  No date on Halloween has been determined yet.
  • Con Edison’s estimated date for restoration throughout Westchester County from this unprecedented storm is November 9th.  Mutual aid crews are now arriving from Maryland, Alabama and California.  Those with underground expertise are headed to New York City.  Those with overhead line experience are deployed to Westchester.  Regular Westchester County crews are not being diverted to New York City.
  • Residents wishing to relocate during the outage should in the first instance consider options with family, friends, or commercial lodging. However, the emergency shelter at Rye Country Day School will remain open through Friday with additional dates to-be-determined.  It can also be used as a warming center or a location to recharge portable devices during the day and evening hours.  Other facilities such as the Rye Free Reading Room are available for recharging as well.
  • Residents should call Con Ed to report their individual outages at 1-800-75-CON ED as they record and measure the seriousness of an outage.

We will provide additional information through all communication channels as it becomes available.
