Rye High #4 State-Wide, But Low Mark in Culture & Diversity

Rye High ranked #4 state wide in a rating by Niche.com, a web site this writer has never heard of that bills itself as "providing reviews and insight from everyday experts".

In the various criteria, Rye scored "A"s or "A+"s with the exception of "Student Culture & Diversity" that scored a "C". Here is the PR from Rye schools:

RYE HIGH SCHOOL NAMED 4th BEST PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL IN NEW YORK; 24th IN NATION BY NICHE.COM

RYE, NY— January 29, 2015— Rye High School was ranked the 4th best public high school in New York State on the Niche 2015 list of Best Public High Schools, a national rating determined by statistics, alumni, parent and student opinions garnered through surveys. Rye’s grade, of which academics accounts for 50 percent, was an overall “A+” grade. Niche said of its annual list, “A high ranking indicates that the school is an exceptional academic institution with a diverse set of high-achieving students who rate their experience very highly.” The list can be accessed by clicking the link below:

Rye was the top high school in Westchester County, followed by Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua in 5th place and Edgemont Junior/Senior High School in 6th. Scarsdale Senior High School ranked 8th, and Bronxville High School ranked 13th.

Superintendent Frank Alvarez attributed Rye High School’s high ranking to, “our excellent mix of Advanced Placement offerings, focus on STEM classes and, most importantly, to our superb teachers and students here in the Rye City School District.”

On Niche’s national list of Best Public High Schools, Rye High School ranked 24th, behind a number of science and technical institutes, including first-ranked High Technology High School in Lincroft, NJ, followed by Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, IL, at number two. International Academy in Bloomfield Hills, MI, was ranked third; and two New York City-area schools, Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan and Staten Island Technical High School, were named 4th and 5th respectively. Jericho Senior High School was the only other New York State school to break the top 25 at number 16.

Methodology

The list ranks 14,431 high schools based on dozens of key statistics and 4.6 million opinions from 280,000 students and parents. Fifty percent of a school’s score is based on academics, 10 percent each on health and safety, student culture and diversity, survey responses and the teachers’ grades, 5 percent on resources and facilities, and 2.5 percent each for sports and extracurricular activities. Magnet, charter and online schools are not eligible for ranking.

Grades

Rye was given an overall Niche grade of “A+.” The District was awarded a top score of A+ in the categories of “Academics,” “Administration & Policies,” “Educational Outcomes,” “Extracurriculars,” “Sports & Fitness” and “Teachers” and an “A” grade in “Health & Safety” and “Resources & Facilities.”
