The OG: Garnet Football Playoff Update

In these 2015 Section One Class A Playoffs Rye’s Garnets have been dealt an interesting hand – mostly containing multiple pairs.
- The first pair came about when for the first time in rivalry history, the # 1 seeded Rye Garnets hosted the #16 ranked HARRISON HUSKIES and played back-to-back contests with Rye’s arch rivals – one to close the regular season immediately followed by a second to start the playoffs. Rye caged the Maroon and White 28-14 and 34-6 to move into the sectional quarter-final.
- Then there was the random voyage with the upriver HENDRICK HUDSON SAILORS with the Garnets sailing smoothly 35-16. The Blue and White thought mutiny, but the Garnets quelled those intentions like slamming the door to the brig. Rye continued to be viewed as the best team in Class A while the Sailors were the 8th and last team remaining when the playoff rankings were reordered.
- The second pair came last week involving the combination of the harvesting of the first planting, the season’s third game in which Rye plowed the YORKTOWN HUSKERS 31-20. In the mate the Garnets narrowly furrowed the Green and White by the reed-thin count of 15-14. “Aw shucks” said Garnet kicker Santi Mascolo following his conversion of a 37-yard field goal with two minutes remaining.
- And this Saturday at Arlington High School, a purportedly neutral site in LaGrangeville, NY, Rye encounters its third pair of the 2015 campaign – this time a repeat battle with the OUR LADY OF LOURDES WARRIORS. But wait the # 1 rated Rye Garnets and their fans must travel 60 miles to this neutral site while the # 3 seeded Blue and Gold skip a mere 6 miles to the venue for Saturday’s skirmish. And Rye is the “home” team as the higher rated? Section One never stops amazing this Old Garnet.
- But wait a fourth pair looms on the horizon should the Garnets outlast the Warriors – a second pairing in two years with the CORNWALL DRAGONS, last year’s Section 9 champion. Garnets still tingle recalling the 21-17 season-ending loss inside the Green and Gold’s with first and goal from the nine yard line. No Livingston to DeGraw as Rye’s season went up in a puff of dragon fire.
It could be a hand of four pairs come next week.
