Rye High Forum @ Teen Drug & Alcohol Abuse, Wednesday

Right on the heels of Tuesay's Rye ACT coalition meeting, Rye High is hosting parents and students Wdnesday night, 7pm in the Performing Arts Center for a forum on teen drug and alcohol abuse.

The note sent by the school follows:

"Dear Rye High School Parents, Guardians and Students:

I am writing to invite parents, guardians and High School students to an educational forum about teen drug and alcohol abuse to be held on Wednesday, May 25th at 7:00 pm in the Performing Arts Center.  The forum is a continuation of the substance abuse programming the High School has provided to students over the last few years.  While these assemblies are usually held during school hours, we felt it was important to make this particular program available to both students and their parents or guardians.

The forum will consist of three presenters, followed by a time for Q&A and discussion.

Steven and Susan Salomone of Drug Crisis in our Backyard will discuss warning signs parents should be looking for in their own children.  The Salomones lost their son, Justin, to addiction, and will convey how activities and actions often attributed to growing pains or adolescent behaviors might instead be factors leading to drug/alcohol abuse. The Salomones will share their story and provide educational information regarding substance abuse.  Drug Crisis in our Backyard is a community action organization helping individuals and families struggling with addiction.

Immediately following the Salomone's presentation, Ms. Lillian Newman, a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor from St. Vincent's Hospital, will address support services available in the area for parents and/or students who suspect substance abuse is taking place in their families.

Finally, Rye Police Department Commissioner Michael Corcoran will discuss police department protocols with regards to drug and alcohol and enumerate opportunities for the Rye PD to work collaboratively with the community.
After the presentations, there will be ample time for questions and answers and public discussion.

I recognize this event is the very next evening following the Rye-ACT Coalition Town Hall Meeting.  Given all the many year-end activities associated with the High School, this was one of the few free evenings available to us.

Thank you for your continued support of the High School student body.  I hope to see you on  May 25th.

Sincerely,
Patricia B. Taylor
Principal"
