Rye FD to Make Candy Cane Run with Santa on Sunday: Neighborhood Visit Schedule

NOTE: event is Sunday, not Saturday as originally reported.

Kyle Wagman, the 2nd Assistant Chief of Rye FD, has told MyRye.com the department will be re-instituting its "Candy Cane Run" tradition this Sunday – this first time since the 1990s. Santa, his elfs and Rye FD members will be riding atop Engine 193 with over 1,000 candy canes to hand out.

Route locations and times between 1pm and 5:30pm this Sunday, December 18th, 2016 are shown below. The department also hopes to raise awareness of fire dangers present during the holidays. "We will also be passing out and spreading information on Smoke and CO Detectors! We also want to make sure Trees are properly watered and lights are properly wired so they don't create a fire hazzard!," said Wagman.

Regarding Christmas trees and lights, The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) General safety tips include:

• Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights.
• Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit.
• Add water to the tree stand. Be sure to add water daily.
• Use lights that are listed by a qualified testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use.
• Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of light strands to connect.
• Never use lit candles to decorate the tree.
• Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed.
• Get rid of the tree after Christmas or when it is dry. Dried-out trees are a fire danger and should not be left in the home or garage, or placed outside against the home.

Other tips from Wagman "In general, a fire in a house double in size every 30 seconds. Families should all have escape plans and make sure their Smoke/Heat/Fire/CO alarms are working. We also strongly suggest homeowners get their chimneys cleaned at least once per season. This will make sure that the chimney is clean for fire/smoke to exit, and for santa to come down!
