The OG on Rye Football: Friday, October 20 Rye @ Walter Panas 7:00PM
By The Old Garnet
Friday, October 20 Rye @ Walter Panas 7:00PM
Before ‘03 the Garnets never knew these kittens, mew, mew, the WALTER PANAS PANTHERS, sister high school to the Lakeland Hornets in Shrub Oak. But it truly is the Blue and Gold who wish they never met Rye’s Garnets.
Between regular season contests and playoff battles, the Garnets have tamed these tabbies purring to a 7-0-0 (1.000) domination. On two previous occasions (’03 & ’04) Panther playoff progress was halted by the Garnets. But be assured these cat fights have been legendary brawls, particularly the ‘14 Garnet win, 56-47, wherein records galore were set, namely: (a) the second-most points ever scored by both teams in a game @ 103, (b) the fifth-most points scored by Rye offensively in a game @ 56, and (c) the sixth-most points ever allowed by the Rye Garnet defense @ 47.
Expect another high octane performance as the #4 seeded Panthers seek their first-ever scratching of the #5 seeded Garnets, in the 2017 Class A Football Championship First Round. If the past is a reliable predictor of Friday night’s outcome the kitty litter says Rye 35 and Walter Panas 21 as the Panthers slink into the woodland darkness. PUNISH THE PANTHERS ! ! PUNISH THE PANTHERS ! ! PUNISH THE PANTHERS ! !
Two things of note:
(1) Arrive early as most spectators are transported from the parking lot to the playing field by school busses due to distance and a steep incline.
(2) The first Garnet booster identifying the identity of who Mr. Walter Panas was, and what was his occupation, wins a free Garnet Pride t-shirt courtesy of the Rye Football Association.
