For Monday, Westchester reported the following City of Rye numbers:

219 total COVID-19 cases since inception;
3 active COVID-19 cases (this assumes the remaining 216 have run the average two week contagion cycle and are no longer active);
0 new COVID-19 cases

Rye guy and Westchester County boss George Latimer held his weekly COVID-19 briefing from the Michaelian Office Building in White Plains. He framed the stress we are all under with four themes:

  1. The pandemic health crisis;
  2. The fiscal crisis;
  3. The social justice crisis;
  4. The power outage AKA “we all want to strangle Con Ed” crisis.

Happy Monday…

“We are being tested, and we will come through this test,” said Latimer. “This is our test as a generation.” He spoke about opening the schools saying “we have a major task ahead of us.”

He also spent a lot of time on the power outage, saying how unacceptable it has been. “There is no reason why on day six we should not be up,” he said. Latimer called for the creation of a utility service corp, which he likened to the National Guard – extra people at the ready who can be brought in at a moment’s notice in the wake of a storm like the one we have just experienced.

Con Ed and all utilities are regulated by the State Public Service Commission and issues will need to be dealt with at that level.

Back on the pandemic, Latimer said the “Federal government has to take charge” and that one needs an overall national strategy. “The Feds have to step in [to control the pandemic] and they have to step in economically too.”

Expect a couple more updates from Latimer this week in the wake of the storm.

Just like everyone else, Latimer is looking at the NY State COVID-19 tracker for county and state level statistics on the pandemic and at the NY State regional monitoring dashboard to see our progress towards continued reopening.
