“Low Risk” Sports Can Begin September 21st – More Guidance Coming

NY Governor Andrew Cuomo said Monday that “low risk” school sports can begin September 21st and that “high risk” sports may practice but are not authorized to play.

Susan Reid Dullea, Rye Schools Director of Health, Physical Education and AthleticsIn the wake of Cuomo’s announcement, new Rye Athletic Director Susan Reid Dullea sent a note to school parents saying the news was “very encouraging” and explaining the New York State Public High School Athletic Association will now take a few days to provide further guidance to districts.

The school note and an exerpt from Cuomo’s news conference follows:

“Dear RMS and RHS Parents and Guardians,

In a news briefing earlier today, Governor Cuomo announced that some “low-risk” fall sports can begin on September 21, and that “high-risk” sports can begin practices. Now that the Governor has released this guidance, Section Executive Directors and NYSPHSAA (New York State High School Athletic Association) officers will meet to discuss next steps. Immediately after the Section meeting, a meeting of the NYSPHSAA COVID-19 Task Force will take place. We expect that NYSPHSAA will provide guidance to local school districts after that second meeting.

I believe I will have concrete information to provide to you by the end of the week. In the meantime, sit tight and think good thoughts for our student-athletes. This is a very encouraging development!

Sincerely,

Susan Reid Dullea

Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics”
