Low Risk Sports Start September 29th; Football, Volleyball, Cheer Moved to March
Rye Athletics announced the start of a modified sports schedule Friday afternoon. The decisions are governed by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, as well as the NY State Department of Health and the Governor.
In an email, Athletic Director Susan Reid Dullea said “Section One has granted us permission to open registration for certain sports at the high school Varsity and Junior Varsity levels. The following sports will have a start date of Sept. 29: Boys soccer, Girls soccer, Field hockey, Girls tennis, Boys/girls cross country. Although girls swimming is classified as a low-risk sport, we cannot open registration as we have no facilities to use. Section One is currently discussing the possibility of moving girls swimming to another season.”
Football, volleyball, and competitive fall cheerleading have been moved to what the Section is calling “Fall Season II” which will begin March 1st, 2021 (see the attached letter from NYSPHSAA for more information about this new season).
Middle school (i.e., intramural and modified) sports are still under discussion by Section One and are not approved at this time.
