In Memory: Shirley Ann Carroll, Age 93
Shirley Ann Carroll, a resident of Rye, New York for 65 years, died Tuesday October 20th, 2020 at The Osborn. She was 93.
She was born on December 16th, 1926 in Meyersdale, Pennsylvania in the local community hospital founded and run by her parents, Dr. Creed C. Glass, M.D. and Hazel M. McGilvery, R.N.
Shirley graduated from Meyersdale High School and then The University of Pittsburgh Nursing School in 1949 with her certificate as a Registered Nurse and began her Masters in Nursing post-graduate internship at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, where she served for two years on the research pediatric cardiology surgical team of Dr. Alfred Blalock, who’s collaboration with pediatric cardiologist Helen Taussig and surgical technician Vivian Thomas, resulted in the breakthrough Blalock-Thomas-Taussig shunt to treat Blue Baby Syndrome which immediately impacted management of this congenital condition around the world.
She then transferred to New York’s Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center where she became an ophthalmologic surgical nurse at The Harkness Eye Institute where she met her future husband, Dr. Frank D. Carroll, M.D. of Rye, New York. Dr. Carroll, a graduate of Harvard College and Yale Medical School, was an associate clinical physician of ophthalmology at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons and was also the Director of the Department of Ophthalmology at The United Hospital in Port Chester, New York. They married on July 2nd, 1955 in the Philip and James Roman Catholic Church in Meyersdale.
As a homemaker in Rye, Shirley made time to volunteer for service at both Milton and Rye High School and at The Rye Visiting Nurses Association where she eventually became its President. She spent countless hours in service to her beloved Resurrection Church parish where she served on The Altar Guild and then founded and helped run The Resurrection Church Gregorian Chant Choir.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Frank, in 2002, and her sister Jane (Glass) Fike of Johnstown, PA. She is survived by her son, Edward J. (Ted) Carroll and his wife Maureen C. Carroll of Rye and her grandson, Edward-William Carroll, of New York City.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Shirley will be held at The Resurrection Church in Rye on Saturday October 24th, 2020 at 9:30 AM. The Mass will be live-streamed for those who are unable to attend in person. Internment at St Mary’s Cemetery afterwards will be private.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested that remembrances be made in the form of contributions to The Edward S. Harkness Eye Institute, 635 West 165th Street, Box #20, New York, New York, 10032
