Early Thursday morning the Rye Fire Department, using the “jaws of life”, freed a deer stuck in a wrought iron fence at the intersection of Barlow Lane and Lane Way in Greenhaven.

“It was actually pretty amazing,” Lt. John McDwyer of Rye FD told MyRye.com. “When we arrived on scene the deer was stuck in the fence and extremely panicked.” The FD put a blanket over the fawn to calm it down and McDwyer said the animal almost went to sleep. Firefighters were then able to use the jaws of life to pry open the fence to free the animal.

There was some surface bleeding caused by skin irritation. “This deer will do fine,” said McDwyer. The FD does warn breeding season for deer starts the first week of November. The activity of the animals picks up resulting in more deer on the roads, creating a hazard for motorists.
