Two Rye residents, Danielle Rehfeld Colen and Lora Katsikas, thought it would be a nice thing to help folks struggling with food insecurity to put a Thanksgiving turkey on the dining room table. The two raised $4,000 and now 360 homes will now enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal.

The two worked with Giving Tree Global (Bread of Life) to distribute the birds via the group’s weekly food pantry on Orchard Avenue in Rye and well as delivering birds to a couple distribution points directly including residents at the Rye Manor apartments on Theall Road.

The turkey cull has been declared a success, but Giving Tree Global (Bread of Life) is still welcoming non perishable food items (see the list below) and financial donations (online or Venmo Bread Life @Bread-of-Life).

The non perishable food donations may be dropped off at 65 Orchard Avenue in Rye (corner of Chestnut St). Food can be left on the table at the end of the driveway between 9am – 5pm.

Non perishable food items requested are:
Canned meats
Canned fruits and vegetables
Soups
Healthy cereal and oatmeal
Peanut butter
Pasta and sauce
stuffing
