Rye Garnet Varsity Boys Soccer Sunk Eastchester 3-1 at Nugent Stadium at Saturday. In a matchup between the top two teams in the league, Rye earned a convincing 3-1 win to claim its second consecutive league championship. The titles in 2019 and 2020 mark the program’s first back-to-back championships since the 1978 and 1979 squads did the same.

“Left back Luke Burnham opened the scoring when he received a flick from Zach Levitt inside the box, took a touch to the left to evade a defender, and calmly found the back right of the goal to put the Garnets up 1-0 in the 1st minute,” said Varsity Boys Soccer Coach Jared Small. “In the 14th minute, substitutes Devan Patel and Nate Collins combined for a remarkable feat. Patel received a throw in up the left flank and used his first touch to cross the ball to Collins who used his own first touch to put Rye up 2-0. An impactful entrance to the match for both guys!”

Rye maintained control of most of the match before surrendering an unlikely goal in the 71st minute to offer the opponent a glimpse of hope before Alex Vollbrecht put an exclamation mark on the title winning performance with a beautiful header off a Michael Desmond free kick in the 76th minute.

Rye’s starting back four of Jonas van Beurden, Jack Formon, Ryan Kovacs, and Burnham were outstanding in limiting a strong Eastchester attack to few changes. Center midfielder Ian Koford continued his exceptional play anchoring the center of the midfield and Ryan Wyckoff logged 40 minutes of strong play in the middle of the park.

Rye ends the game with 7-0-2 season and a league championship.
