Despite the challenges of Covid-19, The Rye Free Reading held its Third Annual Spelling Bee on Veteran’s Day, Wednesday, November 11. Starting out on the Village Green, the program was moved inside due to a bit of rain midway through the event.
Mayor Josh Cohn and Library Director Chris Shoemaker were the word readers for the 26 middle and high-school students who participated in the spelling challenge.
After numerous rounds of competitive spelling, seventh-grader Calvin Holler won the middle-school competition by correctly spelling “hustings.” (A timely word meaning “a meeting at which candidates in an election address potential voters.)” Senior Elizabeth Fink emerged as the high-school winner on her spelling of “pagination.”
Winners will receive a trophy and scholarship prizes to be awarded at the library’s annual meeting in February 2021. Their names will be added to the permanent Spelling Bee trophy that is housed in the main reading room at the library.
Scholarships prizes ($2,500 for middle school and $500 for high school), are sponsored by Carpet Trends, and in honor of Emanuela Riccio.
