Send your thanks to the seventy-five residents who showed up at Disbrow Park Saturday for the Town of Rye Sustainability Committee’s “Earth Day in November” community cleanup day.

Your neighbors picked up trash and removed it from the sensitive wetland ecosystem that abuts Blind Brook. City of Rye Mayor Josh Cohn was on hand to help out, as were many families and other community leaders. The weather was picture perfect with over 200 volunteers signing up to participate across four locations throughout the Town and City of Rye including Disbrow.

All Covid-19 protocols were observed with temperature scans and screening questions at check-in. Participants socially distanced via four designated cleanup zones within the expanse of the park. A total of 1,148.5 pounds of trash was collected including unexpected items such as a toaster, a baseball bat, tiki torches, engine parts and several car tires.

A contest was held for the weirdest pieces of trash found. Two of the younger participants tied as winners of the contest and were each awarded a new trash grabber for the scary decorative dog, toy car and intact frisbee that they unearthed.

The event was a multi-municipality effort with three other cleanups occurring simultaneously over at Crawford Park (invasive vine removal), along a stretch of Bowman Avenue in Rye Brook, and throughout downtown Port Chester. A complimentary lunch was served for all participants at each location by 3 Guys Restaurant Group, the owners and operators of The Barley Beach House in Rye Town Park.
