Boys Varsity Rugby ascends atop St. Anthony’s High School on Long Island 47-14 at an away game last Sunday

“Jack McRedmond came out of the gates on fire with two scores in the first five minutes,” said Boys Varsity Rugby Coach Jim O’Hara. “McRedmond scored his first try (5 points) in the second minute with a 50 yard run along the sideline, then followed up in the fifth minute with a strong run from close range. Captain Dylan Walsh made both conversion kicks (2 points each) to give Rye an early 14-0 lead in the blistering sun.”

After a nearly two-hour trip on the LIE, the Garnets blew the doors off of the Friars in the first half. After two early tries from McRedmond, sophomore Dan Dalton scored what is likely the try of the season by going 60 yards and breaking at least 5 tackles to slice his way in for a score in the tenth minute. Senior Tommy Sciulli followed up with an additional try before the half to give the visitors a 26-7 halftime lead.

It was a hugely physical match played in 90 degree weather, and the toughness from both sides was evident to the sizeable crowd in attendance. Additional tries were scored in the second half by Bernie Costello, Dylan Walsh, and Jack Mullooly. While it was a high scoring game, the match was won on the defensive end for the Garnets. St. Anthony’s plays a tough, relentless brand of rugby so staunch defense was needed and provided by the Garnets. Forwards Ryan Becton and Jack Murphy led the way in the tackle count. The Garnets left the island with a 47-14 win.

The final match of the season was this past Friday June 11th at 7pm at Nugent Field. Watch for our write-up on the Garnets taking on New Rochelle for the Carl Maresca Cup.
