In Memory: Barbara Jakubowski Costello, Age 84

Obituary - Barbara J. CostelloBarbara Jakubowski Costello, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, cousin and friend passed away Tuesday, September 21, 2021, after a courageous 2 ½ year battle with Lymphoma.

A current resident of Rye, NY and resident of New Rochelle, NY for over forty years, Barbara was born in Brooklyn on January 31, 1937 to Frank and Lilian Jakubowski. She spent her school years in Garden City, graduating from nearby Sacred Heart Academy. From there she went on to receive a bachelor’s degree from Mercyhurst College in Pennsylvania.

Her early career was in the business world. After marrying and raising a family, Barbara pursued a master’s degree in Gerontology from the College of New Rochelle, Family Therapy training from the Center for Family Learning in New Rochelle, and a master’s degree in Social Work from Columbia University. A licensed clinical social worker, she was Director of Clinical Services for Catholic Family Services of Bridgeport.

Barbara was passionate in giving back and helping her community. She was past board chair and committed board member of Hospice of Westchester. She was past-president and board member of the Interreligious Council of New Rochelle and served the Interfaith Dwellings Corporation, a sponsor of low-income housing, in a number of executive capacities. She was past president and honorary board member of Meals on Wheels of New Rochelle. Barbara was a communicant and active member of the Church of the Holy Family in New Rochelle, where she also served in numerous capacities, including as a Trustee. In addition, she continued her counseling vocation until recently through her private practice focused on helping individuals and families through adult and aging issues.

She was the widow of the late Thomas J. Costello and the proud mother of T.J.; Maria (Tony) Farren; Adrian (Keller Arnold); Kirsten (Dave) Hernan and the late Jonathan. She was equally proud of her grandchildren: Tommy, Katie, Michael, and Jack Farren and Duncan Costello. She also loved her late brother, Jan (Diane) Jakubowski, her nieces, nephews and their children, as well as her extended Costello and Jakubowski families and her many friends

The family will receive visitors on Friday, October 1st, from 4 to 8 pm at Coxe and Graziano Funeral Home, 767 E. Boston Post Road, Mamaroneck, NY. A funeral mass is scheduled for Saturday, October 2nd at 11 am at Church of The Holy Family.
