Boys Varsity Soccer Gives All to Somers But Needs More
Rye Boys Varsity Soccer gave all to its match with Somers but need just a bit more. They fell 0-2 at the away game.
“We played one of our two best matches of the season and really had our opponent–the state’s top ranked team–on the ropes at several moments,” said Rye Boys Varsity Soccer Coach Jared Small.
“We were inches away from going up by a goal in the 36th minute when Jack Childs beat several defenders and crossed the ball to Tommy Dore, who struck the ball cleanly only to have the Somers keeper make a diving save with his feet. Somers eventually broke through with the game winner in the 61st minute and added an insurance goal 2 minutes later. Ultimately, a fantastic effort from our group and we couldn’t have asked for any more effort.”
Philip Hovers was brilliant, making a handful of huge saves to keep the game tied and providing an incredible save on a PK to keep the game within reach. Jonas van Beurden returned to the lineup for the first time since early October and made a huge impact. Ryan Wyckoff and Michael Desmond ran the team’s engine room in the midfield, and the backline of Ryan Kovacs, Jack Formon, Henry Field, John Sterkaj, and Charlie O’Rorke played a nearly perfect match.
