Rye Girls Varsity Soccer took the polish off Pearl River on Thursday. In the Section 1 semifinal match, Rye won the battle with the Pearl River Pirates, number 7 team in all of NYS for class A teams, 1-0 at home.

“Pearl River was a very physical team who played a direct style of soccer, kicking the ball long and over the top,” said Rye Girls Varsity Soccer Rich Savage. “The first half Pearl River had two solid scoring opportunities, but Rye’s keeper Bell Jackson was solid on the net for Rye. During the second half, Rye settled the ball down and focused on keeping the ball on the ground and changing the point of attack. Isabel Harvey, Despina Sfiris, and Reilly Traynor led the back line, while Hannah Bertisch controlled the midfield for Rye. It was freshman Bowyn Brown who took the ball from two defenders and played a perfectly placed ball to sophomore Della Goodman. Della stepped up and took a perfect shot from 25 yards out placing it upper 90 of the goal.”

Rye continued to play strong defense in the last 18 minutes of the game to preserve the 1-0 lead. Watch the replay.

The Garnets will play in the Sectional Final match 5:30 pm at Nyack High School on Sunday, 10/31.
