In Memory: Mary E. Savage, Age 97

Obituary - flowersMary E. Savage of Port Chester, NY passed away on November 11, 2021, after a long and fun filled life. Born and raised in Rye, NY on June 16, 1924, Mary was the daughter of John and Margaret Schindo. Mary was a graduate of Rye High School. Always active, Mary was an outstanding athlete, earning letters in Basketball and Field hockey, she was also an accomplished golfer and bowler.

During WWII , Mary served in the US Coast Guard in an administrative role on Governor’s Island. After the war, she moved to Ithaca, NY to assist returning GIs in the admissions office at Cornell University, eventually returning to Rye and her NYC based job with Travelers Insurance. In 1954, she married her husband Jim, a Rye Police Officer, and began raising her family in Port Chester NY.

Always having a flair for fashion, Mary enjoyed her work with Ann Stephens, a women’s clothing retailer.

Mary is survived by her two sons, Richard of Port Chester and Jim (James Jr.) and Ann “Greany” Savage of Stamford Ct, and her grandchildren Grace and Jack. Always proud of her two sons, Mary took great delight in the joys of watching her grandchildren grow up.

She was predeceased by her husband James (Jim), and two brothers, Robert (Bobby) and John (Jack).

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, November 19 at 10 AM, at the Church of the Resurrection in Rye. The Mass will be livestreamed for those who are unable to attend in person. Entombment will follow at St. Mary Cemetery in Rye Brook.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in her memory to Hospice of Westchester, 1025 Westchester Avenue, White Plains, NY 10604.
