In Memory: Dr. George Ofori-Amanfo, Age 59

Obituary - Dr. George Ofori-AmanfoDr. George Ofori-Amanfo passed away on December 30, 2021. A resident of Rye, NY, Dr. Ofori-Amanfo was born on April 4, 1962, in Accur, Ghana. He was the son of John and Yaa Brenya Ofori-Amanfo. Dr. Ofori-Amanfo married the former Celine Hammond on June 15, 2007. Together they raised their three children. He is survived by his wife Celine, his children: Francis Ofori-Amanfo of Richmond VA, Justine Ofori-Amanfo of Rye, NY and Christian Ofori-Amanfo of Rye, NY. He is survived by his brothers Francis Ofori-Amanfo of Utrecht, the Netherlands and Stephen Ofori-Amanfo of Accra, Ghana. The family will receive friends at the Graham Funeral Home, Rye, NY on Thursday January 13, 2022, from 4 PM to 7 PM.

Dr. Ofori-Amanfo was the Division Chief of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine in the Jack and Lucy Clark Department of Pediatrics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and at Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital. He had been with Mount Sinai Health System since 2018. Prior to that, he worked at Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, Albert Einstein College of Medicine; the Children’s Hospital of New York, Columbia University; Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia; and Duke University Medical Center.

Dr. Ofori-Amanfo dedicated his career to the care of children here and abroad. He was part of multiple medical missions dedicated to the care of children in Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, Kenya, and his native country, Ghana. His research focused on cardiac arrest and resuscitation and he was a principal investigator for one of the largest randomized pediatric trials investigating the effect of targeted temperature management on neurologic outcome and survival after cardiac arrest. Dr. Ofori-Amanfo was a master clinician, an inspiring leader, and a beloved and devoted mentor to innumerable trainees, cardiologists, and critical care physicians. What truly set him apart was his gentleness, kindness, and empathy, and his love of his patients and the medicine he practiced. He will be sorely missed. Lisa M. Satlin, MD, Herbert H.
