PHOTOS: Izzy Brings Flooding, Winds
A coastal flood warning remains in effect until 1pm Monday and winds will continue, but winter storm Izzy seems to have had a lighter touch on Rye than expected.
Of course, that is not the case if you live along Milton Road, Kirby Lane or the other areas through town that are typically subject to coastal flooding even when the rest of town sees milder effects.
Con Ed is only reporting one outage across Rye as of 10am Monday.
Rye PD reported the following issues overnight Sunday into Monday:
- Tree / Peck Ave @ Rye colony was cleared by DPW at 3:20 AM
- Tree / power line Con Ed was notified of the 300 block area of Rye Beach Ave which has an estimated repair time of 9:00PM.
- Tree / Club Rd @ Sunset Lane – DPW notified at 7:20 AM.
- Tree / Midland Ave @ Playland Pkwy – DPW notified at 7:24 AM.
- Wire / Hook Rd @ Forest Ave was cleared by Verizon.
- Wire / Rickbern Street was cleared by Con Ed.
- Wire / 300 Block of Midland Ave and Con Ed has been notified.

“Winter Storm Izzy”??? What makes you think snowstorms have names? The National Weather Service doesn’t name the snow. Maybe you’re thinking of The Weather Channel, which has assigned cute names to snowstorms for a few years now. You shouldn’t indulge them in their publicity stunt.
One Facebook user posted THIS criticism: “Naming winter storms is the dumbest idea ever. Why hasn’t NWS or any other reputable weather reporting source joined in the naming? Oh, maybe they still feel their role is serious reporting – instead of sensationalizing, dramatizing and commercializing.” It’s pretty much how I have always felt.
TWC’s Tom Niziol attempted to deflect the criticism: “One reason we’re doing this, simply put, is we can. We cover weather on a national scale. By ascribing a name to a weather system that’s gonna create those types of impacts, we can follow it right across the country.”
THAT’S their answer? “We do it because we CAN”?? And the only way the personalities at TWC can keep their eye on a weather system is to give it some kind of cute name? That’s the silliest thing I’ve ever heard.
