Rye Varsity Ski Team MVPs: Cassidy Pagen & Justin Gray
MyRye.com is featuring varsity team MVPs from the Winter 2021-2 sports season. The MVPs have been selected by each coach. A big MyRye.com congratulations to all the MVPs.
Rye Varsity Ski MVPs are junior Cassidy Pagen and sophomore Justin Gray.
Cassidy Pagen
“As a Co-Captain, Junior, Cassidy Pagen lead the Rye Girl’s Varsity Ski Team to its best season ever, helping lead the team to be one of the stronger teams in Section I,” said Rye Varsity Ski Team Co-head Coach David Gray. “Cassidy has been the most consistent skier on the Girl’s Varsity Ski Team this year finishing in the Top 10 of every race she competed in this season, including the Section I Qualifier.”
As one of the top racers in Section I, Cassidy was due to compete to qualify for States at Hunter Mountain, but tore her ACL on a GS practice run the day before the team was traveling to Hunter.
“There is no doubt with her drive and determination that Cassidy will be back stronger and better for her Senior year to represent Rye in the Section I Sectionals, and hopefully States,” said Gray.
Justin Gray
“Co-Captain, Sophomore, Justin Gray also lead the Rye Boy’s Varsity Ski Team to its best season ever helping to make them one of the stronger teams in Section I,” said Gray. “Justin was one of the most consistent skiers on the Boy’s Varsity Ski Team finishing in the Top 10 of every Section I race he competed in this season, including the Section I Qualifier.”
“Justin was the only Rye racer to have won an event after finishing First in the Slalom at Thunder Ridge on 1/18. Justin’s finish, along with those of his teammates, led the Rye Boy’s to a Team Victory that night. As one of the top racers in Section I, Justin competed to qualify for States and represent Rye at Hunter Mountain on 2/16 where he finished 9th in Giant Slalom and 18th in the Slalom and 10th in the overall Ski Meister competition.”
Justin narrowly missed qualifying for States, but given that he is a sophomore, there is no doubt that he’ll be back next year to make a strong run at it.
